@FyreFiend: Can't say I
agree. If you do have thousands of subscribers, then you're most
likely always connected, so to speak. And if you are, there is time
to follow everything, trust me. You just have to care. I'll have to
agree with @CaffeineJunky.
Oh, and btw, the other way round, if you follow 20,000 people
and have 40 followers, you're SPAM! That's gotta be the biggest
truism I've ever said, I know.
@bvlad I agree on the
second part. As for the first, @gamgee911 said it better than I.
It would be like trying to follow a busy IRC channel,
impossible.
@FyreFiend: Still can't
agree. I for example follow ~200 people here and ~130 on twitter.
At times there are 10-15 minutes in which I hardly see a new post.
I see 1000 as more than manageable, especially if you're an
internet 'superstar' like some I won't name (but we've all heard
of) are. Or perhaps I should name. Dunno yet. My point is that I
really don't see how, out of tens of thousands of subscribers, you
only find a hundred or two interesting. Really. That spells an ego
problem imho.
allow me to give the example of my facebook, if i open up my
main page and just refresh it, i've missed a bunch of events
inbetween and i miss out on events from my close friends. and I'm
not around a computer all day and I can't afford a cell phone text
plan so i don't get events the minute they come out, I don't see
any major issue with people not following followers all the
time.
begins to sort through facebook list
I would agree with you if I know the guy to be a prude or w/e
(celeb, etc), but my judgment would depend on the person, not just
his list of followers vs who he follows.
@gamgee911: Agree on
"would depend on the person". And I didn't mean you should
automatically follow all your followers. My point is in the
percentage. I mean, if you follow less than, say 5% (or insert any
other arbitrary number here), then you fall into
the category I was talking about.
I try to keep my follower ratio in check. I am not here for a
popularity contest. I am not well known nor is that my goal either.
Maybe if I was popular I would change my tune, but I doubt it.
You know what, that reminds me of a feature req for Jaiku. The
ability to separate new post email notifications from new followers
email notifications. That would be helpful, right?
@bvlad, ok, I can agree
with that for most situations, but just for the sake of making this
conversion intersting, lets say i suddenly rickroll the president
and it goes on tv. this might spawn a lot of people to follow me
(the post I RICKROLLED PRESIDENT BUSH!!! should let people know its
me) but idk who these people are, and if I do get 10,000 followers
or w/e (keeping hypothetical) does it make me more snobbish to only
follow my real friends?
I have 241 followers on Twitter, and only 'follow' 64, though to
be honest I only log in there ~once a month. I do have S-G pulling
into my updates, and I think another site, I don't recall. I'll be
the first to tell you I don't participate there.
However, on Jaiku, I'm following 171, with 267 following me. I
do periodically go through my followers and add people, but I keep
Jaiku limited, cause I like the interactivity.
However, I can confess that lately I've been getting sloppy on
Facebook. I need to go through there and prune things, but
whatever. My life is pretty public anyways. Heck, I livecasted my
wedding.
There are different strategies. I only follow people who say
something with important new facts and figures, not my friends,
which are few and irrelevant for my Jaiku usage.

Or they're trying not to become overwelmed with messages.

You'd never see what your friends are up to, they'd be awash with tons of other messages :P

@rcadden lol, that's pretty public. XD

@gamgee911: Can't argue with that point.
@rcadden: Your Jaiku ratio does not include you in the category I was referring to. I hope you had the champagne ready! ;)

@bvlad lol, I wouldn't be able to either. XD
